Afro Mermaid Summit – Bego Antón

It couldn’t be missing from our anniversary. Admired and scorned, kidnapped and buffeted by the sea, an unwitting protagonist of controversies, gossip, local television news and newspaper articles, it’s no exaggeration to say that El Sireno (The Merman) – by the Argentine photographer Marcos López, presented at the first edition in 2007 and permanently installed at the Old Port of Algorta for the past 15 years – is the most emblematic work in the history of the Festival.

To bid it a final farewell before its imminent removal and offer it a new life, its queer marine spirit presides over this photocall, which includes a sculpture by Bilbao-based artist Bada (José Ramón Bañales) inspired by an ongoing project on African-American mermaids by photographer Bego Antón. The group portrait, taken by Bego Antón herself, is from the Afro Mermaid Summit held in Florida in 2025, organised by Carrie Wata.
