Friday Reports
Satoshi Fujiwara was in Paris when the terrorist attacks occurred on Friday, November 13, 2015. Upon approaching the scenes, he found them empty of the usual people but filled with the media. The subject of Friday Reports is the media ecosystem itself, which reproduces and disseminates the same types of images, regardless of the event. The same frames, the same cameras and video cameras, and the same visual language transform any event, no matter how extraordinary, into an identical scenario. This scenographic dimension is very present in this piece of work. While media images are currently consumed primarily in digital format and on screen, Fujiwara asserts the materiality of photography with large-format installations that broaden the focus, displaying their textures almost to the point of abstraction.
His work recalls that of American photographer Garry Winogrand, who, in his 1969 series Public Relations, brought together photographs of all kinds of events, such as press conferences, inaugurations, demonstrations, and sporting events, highlighting the impact of the media on what was happening. Fujiwara, like Winogrand, incorporates this meta-photographic reflection that indicates how the media’s gaze controls and, at times, even constructs the event itself.
Born in Kobe, Japan, in 1984, Satoshi Fujiwara is an artist and photographer based in Berlin. His work has been presented in important spaces such as the Jameel Arts Centre Dubai, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto and the Fondazione Prada in Milan. He has also participated in several fairs, festivals and biennials such as the Biennale de l’Image Possible, Photo London, Paris Photo, Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam, among others. Fujiwara’s first series, Code Unknown, was awarded the Japan Photo Award in 2014. His work has also been nominated for prestigious awards, including the Foam Paul Huf Award from Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2018, the Prix Pictet Japan Award in 2017 and the Outset Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam in 2015. He has collaborated with several institutions and brands, including Issey Miyake, Amnesia Scanner, NikeLab X Matthew M Williams, Sharjah Architecture Triennial, Balenciaga and Salomon X Gr10k.
