THE REPUBLIC OF NULL ISLAND

Web_2026_Simon_01

The Republic of Null Island is an imaginary island somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, where a vast amount of random information is accumulating.

Satellite positioning systems such as GPS use longitude and latitude coordinates to geolocate physical devices and digital content. However, when, due to error or omission, a photograph, a hiking trail, or an apartment rental listing cannot be assigned its actual coordinates, the databases automatically assign it the location “0,0”. This type of automated assignment has resulted in numerous files and pieces of digital information being geolocated somewhere in the Gulf of Guinea, where the Prime Meridian and the Equator intersect. The digital representation of this place doesn’t show what actually happens there, but reflects the production conditions and limitations of the satnav systems we use every day.

Born in Germany in 1989, he lives and works in Berlin. With a degree in New Media from the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, Simon Weckert is an artist whose work lies at the intersection of digital art, technology, and social criticism. Through installations, interventions, and experimental projects, he explores how algorithmic systems, digital networks, and data affect our daily lives and the way we perceive the world. His work and performances have been exhibited at V&A Dundee, Ars Electronica Linz, CCBT Tokyo, chi K11 artspace Shanghai, Löwenbräukunst Zurich, Vitra Design Museum, EDF Foundation Paris, Transmedial Berlin, and Bauhaus Museum Weimar. His work combines irony, technical precision, and a strong desire for critical reflection on the digital present.
