This project is a modification of the video game Grand Theft Auto V in which the NPCs (Non Playable Characters, like extras in movies) have been turned into compulsive photographers, all men, equipped with incredible state-of-the-art cameras. The time of the game has also been changed, so that it is always the ‘golden hour’, when the sun casts the best light, and these characters without a role in the plot can only photograph it tirelessly while quotes from Vilem Flusser’s 1983 essay Towards a Philosophy of Photography can be heard on the voiceover.

In this influential essay, Flusser contradicts the traditional idea of the photographer as a master of technique, to suggest that it is the camera that controls the photographer, forcing them to take endless images. Seduced by the ideal of perfection and trapped in its own canon, the gesture of taking a photo is thus heading towards redundancy. Towards a Philosophy of the Photo Daddy ironically talks about the difficulty of photography in adapting to digital imagery and the changes that technical development has brought to the medium.

2girls1comp is a modding duo founded in 2023 by Marco de Mutiis (Italia, 1983) and Alexandra Pfammatter (Suitza, 1993). Their work changes the logic of video games as an act of creative counter-play, revealing the social and economic fabric in which they are immersed: from reclaiming global digital infrastructures to commenting on free labour within the capitalist ideologies of the gaming industry, to showcasing the way play can influence its subjects through its mechanics. Their projects are distributed within the gaming and modding community, as well as cultural and artistic contexts.
